The Way To Wealth

Waste neither Time nor Money, but make the best Use of both. -- Ben Franklin

Benjamin Franklin's The Way To Wealth is the first known American book on the subject of personal finance. The Way To Wealth is a collection of quotes and advice taken from Poor Richard's Almanac during its first 25 years of publication. It contains many famous quotes from Ben Franklin, plus time tested advice on working hard, saving a portion of what is earned, and avoiding debt. Frugality and having a strong work ethic are recurring themes in the book. Franklin was a very practical and frugal man who believed in putting knowledge into practice. He took an optimistic yet prudent approach to personal finance, was wary of "sure deals", and believed in diversifying his income sources so he could weather financial setbacks. He believed strongly in frugal living, and observed in his lifetime (as is still true today) that people generally spend far too much time, energy and money accumulating things that serve practically no real purpose other than to impress people. He invested in common stocks, owned rental property and interest bearing bank accounts, and loaned money to individuals and institutions to be paid back with interest.

The Way To Wealth can be counted among Benjamin Franklin's major achievements. It was first published as a pamphlet by Benjamin Franklin in 1757, 19 years before the United States was even a country! Over the years it has been reprinted numerous times, translated into foreign languages, and sold millions of copies. It contains counsel that stands the test of time, and is as relevant today as it was in Franklin's lifetime. Excerpts from The Way To Wealth include some well known Ben Franklin quotes such as "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise“, and other less known but equally powerful quotes like "Think what you do when you run into debt; you give to another power over your liberty", and "If you would be wealthy, think of saving, as well as of getting." In fact, the famous quotes from Ben Franklin that are used on this web site came straight out of The Way To Wealth.

The Way To Wealth covers the following topics from Franklin's life:

- Planning
- Working
- Saving
- Investing
- Owning
- Protecting
- Borrowing
